Sweet Science - Raspberry Rose

Raspberry Rose - Raspberry Rosewater Ice Cream

We return to the Saint-Paul-based Sweet Science brand for the first of their two July flavors: Raspberry Rose.  I had to check the ingredient list to see if this was rosé as in the wine or rosewater as in the floral extract.  It is rosewater.  I have seen rosewater in ice cream once before.  That time it was paired with a nut, this time it is used to accent a raspberry base.

The top of the pint is a pinkish color.  As I dig in, the raspberry flavor is not overly strong but quite delicious.  Raspberry is one of those fruit flavors that can be overly strong or tart.  That is definitely not the case here.  Nothing specifically has been added to cut the flavor -- except perhaps more milk and cream -- it is just a lighter raspberry flavor.  The rosewater was not immediately evident as I was eating each spoonful.  Where I noticed it was afterwards -- what some foodies call the 'finish'.  It is quite subtle but pretty good.

This is a very good pint of raspberry ice cream.  It is one solid homogeneous raspberry pint so it has a very simple feel to it. That said, the floral finish gives it a very nuanced feel as if it was how a high-end restaurant would make a raspberry ice cream.  This makes a good companion flavor to last month's strawberry mascarpone -- another light and nuanced fruit-based pint.
