Salted Caramel - Salted Caramel Ice Cream |
The Saint-Paul-based Izzy's Ice Cream recently had a pint sale for the holidays. I did not see any of their People's Flavor Award winners available for hand-packing that day so I went back to the freezer case and picked up a couple of their more simple flavors. Today's flavor is Salted Caramel. I went on a Salted Caramel jag back in May & June of this year, so it'll be interesting to add Izzy's to the list to see how they compare.
Opening the pint, the caramel is the expected caramel color. This is perhaps a little lighter in color, though it is not the lightest color caramel that I have seen. This first spoonful is fairly salty! This is a pint that embraces the 'salt' in salted caramel, so make sure you are fully hydrated. Underneath the salt is a lighter caramel flavor. It is quite delicious. The texture is creamy and easy-to-spoon as I've grown to expect from Izzy's (their hand-packed pints tend to be denser, probably due to the packing). Not much else to say about a homogeneous caramel flavor.
This is a solid and tasty implementation of a salted caramel flavor. The flavor is quite delicious. For these salted caramel pints, there are two main discretionary choices a brand can make: the level of salt and the strength of the caramel. Here I would rank the salt as stronger than average. It is not as salty as Sweet Science, but it is a salty pint. For caramel flavor, I would rank it a bit lighter than average -- not as light as Graeter's but still lighter than the average pint.
