Jeni's - White Chocolate Peppermint

White Chocolate Peppermint - Pink and White Peppermint Ice Cream Swirled Together with White Chocolate Freckles

Today is the day for the second of my six-pint shipment from the Columbus-based Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream and is called White Chocolate Peppermint.  Like the first pint, it is another holiday themed flavor.  Peppermint is naturally white, but Jeni's uses natural juices (beetroot, apple & pumpkin) to create the pink color.  In a previous pint, she used spirulina to create a green color.  It is interesting the different colors that people want to project onto a peppermint.  In a mint chocolate chip, it feels like it should be green, but in a candy cane, it feels like it should be red.

On to the ice cream!  Removing the lid, I see two colors - pink and white.  Here, the two colored sections appear to take up separate halves of the pint.  Care has been taken to keep the two colors from blending so that you can enjoy the two colors.  Jeni's did something similar with their Supermoon flavor.  Digging in the peppermint flavor is excellent.  Yum!  Every once in a while, I run into a white chocolate 'freckle'.  These are about the same size and shape as cucumber seeds.  My palate perceives white chocolate as an inert flavor, so these mix-ins do not add or subtract to the delicious peppermint base but they do provide me something to crunch on from time to time.

This is an excellent pint of peppermint ice cream.  Perfect for the holidays!  The competition for pink peppermint ice creams in premium ice cream brands is quite fierce.  McConnell's and Graeter's also have excellent implementations of this flavor.  If I had to pick a favorite, I might pick Graeter's but all three are home runs.  In this Jeni's pint, the mix-ins are white chocolate freckles instead of peppermint candies if that helps you distinguish between them.  You can't go wrong here.  If you enjoy a peppermint ice cream for the holidays, you will enjoy this pint.
